Never leave a baby unattended in the bath, not even for a moment and not even in a bath seat. Run the cold tap last, and check the temperature with your elbow or a thermometer rather than your hand.

Newborn skin needs very little. Plain water is all most midwives suggest for the first month, and products come in gradually after that. If your baby's skin is dry, cracked or inflamed, that is worth a word with a health visitor or pharmacist rather than trying a different bottle.

Patch test on a small area first if there is any history of eczema or sensitivity in the family, and stop using anything that causes redness.
