Rinse aid is what stops glasses drying with streaks and water spots. All-in-one tablets include a rinse aid function, but in hard water a separate bottle makes a visible difference and this is the cheapest way to fix cloudy glassware.

Top it up when the machine's indicator light says so rather than every wash. Both salt and rinse aid have their own reservoirs and are only refilled occasionally.

Do not confuse dishwasher salt with table salt. Table salt contains additives that will damage the softening unit, and it is a genuinely expensive mistake.
