Top it up when the machine's indicator light says so rather than every wash. Both salt and rinse aid have their own reservoirs and are only refilled occasionally.

Do not confuse dishwasher salt with table salt. Table salt contains additives that will damage the softening unit, and it is a genuinely expensive mistake.
